Before ordering a memorial diamond, you should consider the need of an independent gemology certificate as proof that it is a genuine diamond that comes out of a laboratory (using an ashes into diamonds process) instead of a diamond mine.
When making diamonds out of ashes, the resulting authentication certificates are issued by either the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
The certificate not only authenticates its nature and origin but also specifies the grading of its 4 Cs.
International Gemological Institute (IGI)
International Gemological Institute (IGI), founded in 1975 and headquartered in Antwerp, is a diamond, coloured stone and jewellery certification organisation. IGI has offices in New York City, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Toronto, Los Angeles, Kolkata, New Delhi, Surat, Chennai, Thrissur, Ahmedabad, Shanghai, and Cavalese.
Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), founded in 1931 and headquartered in California, is a non-profit institute, dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology, which sets and maintains the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality. The GIA has offices in 13 countries, with 11 education campuses, 9 laboratories, and 4 research centers worldwide.
